Choosing a door hardware finish

Finish is the decision that outlasts every other choice on a door. Function can be swapped, backsets can be adapted, but the finish sets the tone of a room for as long as the hardware stays on the door. It is also the specification most often decided from a screen, which is where the problems start — brushed nickel and satin chrome look almost identical in a product photo and read completely differently in a hallway.

Three questions narrow it down quickly. Does the room lean warm or cool? Do you want hardware that stays exactly as it arrives, or hardware that ages? And is the door exposed to weather or salt air?

Finishes that stay, finishes that change

Plated and PVD-coated finishes — polished chrome, satin chrome, brushed nickel, polished nickel, brushed gold PVD and matt black — are engineered to hold their appearance. They arrive a certain colour and stay that colour with nothing more than routine cleaning. Several carry a finish component within the manufacturer warranty; on Iver, polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished nickel and brushed gold PVD carry a lifetime finish manufacturer warranty.

Living finishes behave differently on purpose. Uncoated solid brass and bronze react with air and hand contact, darkening over months into a patina that is deepest where nobody touches and brightest where everybody does. Polished brass, antique brass and raw bronze all sit in this group. The change is the material doing what it is meant to do, which is why living finishes are excluded from finish warranties across every brand we carry. Choose one because you want the hardware to record its use, not in spite of it.

Coastal and external doors

Salt air overrides aesthetics. Within roughly a kilometre of surf coast, external hardware should be 316 marine grade stainless steel. Further inland or on sheltered elevations, 304 stainless or a quality PVD finish will generally hold up. Neither grade is maintenance-free — regular fresh water rinsing is what keeps stainless performing, and corrosion traced to an unsuitable specification is not a warranty matter.

Mixing finishes across a home

Mixing works when it is consistent within a visual field and deliberate between them. Keep all door hardware on a level in one finish — including hinges, door stops and strike plates — then change between zones rather than within them. Mismatched hinges are the single detail that makes a considered scheme look accidental.

Pairings that hold up tend to combine one warm and one cool metal: matt black with brushed brass, or polished chrome with bronze. Two warm finishes in the same room usually read as a substitution rather than a choice.

Looking after the finish

Most finish damage comes from cleaning products, not from use. A soft dry cloth handles routine dust; for marks, use a barely damp cloth and dry straight away. Avoid abrasive creams and pads, bleach, ammonia, and any bathroom or kitchen spray containing solvents or acids — these strip plating and coatings, and damage of this kind is not covered by any manufacturer warranty. On brushed finishes, always wipe with the grain.
