Door Closer Functions Explained

Standard (non hold-open). The door closes automatically after every use. This is the setting required on most fire-rated doors.
Cam action. Uses a cam instead of a rack-and-pinion mechanism, so the door is much easier to open. This helps meet accessibility requirements and is common in hospitals, schools and public buildings.
Adjustable closing & latching speed. Separate valves let you tune the main closing sweep (about 180°–15°) and the final latching action (about 15°–0°).
Adjustable power (EN size). Sets how much force the closer uses to close the door, matched to the door's width and weight — see the power-size guide below.
Hold-open versions are also available — they park the door open at a set angle and close once released. A mechanical hold-open must not be used on a fire door unless it is an approved electromagnetic (fire-alarm released) hold-open.
Other functions offered across this closer range: Backcheck slows the door as it nears the fully open position so it can't slam into an adjacent wall (protecting the hinges, frame and wall) and delayed action holds the door open, or closes it slowly, for the first part of the swing to give extra time for wheelchairs, prams and trolleys. This model includes the functions listed above.
Mounting: a regular (standard) arm mounts on the push side; a parallel arm mounts on the pull side with the arm flush to the door (popular in commercial buildings as it resists damage); a slide-rail arm gives a low-profile track; top-jamb mounting suits outward-opening doors.

Made to order. This finish is made to order. Only Silver and Black are normally held in stock with the supplier — for this finish, call Prime Hardware on 1800 329 028 to confirm availability and lead time.
What size door does it suit?

Overhead closers are power-adjustable; the size range in the product title (e.g. EN 1–4) indicates the door widths/weights it covers. Contact Prime Hardware if you need help matching a size.

What do delayed action, hold-open and back-check do?

Delayed action pauses the door open before it closes; hold-open keeps it open at a set point; back-check cushions the door if it is thrown open. Only the functions named in this product's title are fitted.

Can it be mounted on either side?

Yes — these closers suit push or pull side; slide-rail and parallel-arm options give a lower-profile or flush installation.

What is backcheck?

Backcheck slows the door as it nears the fully open position so it can't be flung into an adjacent wall — protecting the hinges, frame, closer and wall. It is a cushioning feature, not a hold-open, and is useful in windy or exposed locations. Only closers whose title lists backcheck have this fitted.

What is delayed action?

Delayed action holds the door open, or closes it very slowly, through the first part of the swing before returning to normal speed — giving extra time for wheelchairs, prams, trolleys or moving furniture. It is common in hospitals and aged care. Only closers whose title lists delayed action (DA) have this fitted.

What do the EN power sizes mean?

The EN power size (EN 1154) sets the closing force, and each size is defined by the door leaf's width and weight. As a guide: EN1 up to 750 mm / 20 kg, EN2 up to 850 mm / 40 kg, EN3 up to 950 mm / 60 kg, EN4 up to 1100 mm / 80 kg, EN5 up to 1250 mm / 100 kg, EN6 up to 1400 mm / 120 kg. A range such as EN 1–4 means the closer is adjustable across those sizes — a wider or heavier door needs a higher power size.

Standard arm, parallel arm or slide rail — what's the difference?

A regular (standard) arm mounts on the push side. A parallel arm mounts on the pull side and sits flush to the door — popular in commercial buildings because it resists damage. A slide-rail arm runs in a low-profile track for a neater look. Top-jamb mounting is used on outward-opening doors.

Is this finish in stock?

Silver and Black finishes are normally held in stock with the supplier. All other finishes (and no-finish/raw components) are made to order — call Prime Hardware on 1800 329 028 to confirm availability and lead time before you order.

What warranty applies?

Lockwood products carry a 25-Year Mechanical Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Electrical/electronic components, where fitted, carry a separate electronic warranty. Manufactured by ASSA ABLOY Australia.
