How to Choose the Right Balance
If you're replacing a balance, measure the body length of the old unit and match the 'L' dimension in the size chart below. For a new top sash, measure the overall sash height including horns (the Closed 'C' dimension) and pick the balance whose C matches, or the next smaller. For a bottom sash, measure the window opening height from sill to head (the Extended 'E' dimension) and pick the balance whose E matches, or the next larger.
Weigh the sash, or estimate it from the glass thickness (see the guide below). Match the weight to Range 1 (2.25–7.25 kg), Range 2 (7.25–10 kg) or Range 3 (10–14 kg).
Choose the standard foot attached, or 'no foot' to fit an adjustable foot (ordered separately, together with the tension key).
Whitco spiral balances are supplied in black only.
Working Out the Sash Weight
| Glass thickness | Weight per m² |
|---|---|
| 3 mm | 7.5 kg/m² |
| 4 mm | 10.0 kg/m² |
| 5 mm | 12.5 kg/m² |
| 6 mm | 15.0 kg/m² |
| Double-glazed 6+6 mm | 30.0 kg/m² |
Multiply the weight per m² by the sash glass area (double the figure for double-glazed), then add an allowance for the sash frame. Best practice is to weigh the sash for an accurate result.

How do I choose the right spiral balance for my window?
First get the length: if you're replacing one, measure the old balance's body length and match the 'L' dimension in the size chart. For a new top sash, measure the sash height including horns (Closed 'C') and pick that balance number or the next smaller; for a bottom sash, measure the opening height sill-to-head (Extended 'E') and pick that number or the next larger. Then pick the weight range (1, 2 or 3) from the sash weight, choose the foot option, and it comes in black.
How do I work out the sash weight?
Weigh the sash for the most accurate result, or estimate from the glass: 3 mm ≈ 7.5 kg/m², 4 mm ≈ 10, 5 mm ≈ 12.5, 6 mm ≈ 15, double-glazed 6+6 mm ≈ 30 kg/m². Multiply by the glass area and add an allowance for the frame, then match to Range 1 (2.25–7.25 kg), 2 (7.25–10 kg) or 3 (10–14 kg).
What does the balance number mean — why do the codes and lengths differ?
Each balance number is a specific length. This one, No. 480, has a 724 mm body, a Closed 'C' dimension of 749 mm and an Extended 'E' dimension of 1422 mm. A larger number is a longer balance for a taller sash, so the code and length change together — always match the number to your sash, not just the weight.
Standard foot or adjustable foot?
The standard foot comes attached. The 'no foot' version is supplied ready to accept an adjustable foot, which is ordered separately along with the tension key used to set the spring tension.
What's the difference between a spiral and a spring balance?
Both counter-balance a double-hung sash so it stays open at any height. A spiral balance uses a variable-pitch spiral and torsion spring in a fully sealed tube (timber or aluminium windows); a spring balance uses a tension spring and a friction foot (aluminium windows). They are not interchangeable — match the type to your existing window.
